Rebound by Tronson in red half leather with hand-made, marbled paper covering the boards, with five raised bands and gilt decoration including gilt lettering direct to spine, red speckled edges to page blocks. A leaf which is bound in this copy but is headed '[This leaf not to be bound with the Volume]' states : 'CONDITIONS OF PUBLICATION. | This edition, specially prepared for subscription only, | will be completed in TWENTY-TWO parts, at 2s. each, | or in SIX DIVISIONS, cloth gilt, at 9s each, and is not | obtainable from the ordinary Booksellers.' The large fold-out map in Volume I is : 'A Map of the Route of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition through Africa. The large fold-out maps in Volume II are: (i) A Map of the Routes of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition from the River Congo to the Victoria Nyanza, by Henry M. Stanley, and (ii) A Map of Emin Pasha's Province. In 1886, Stanley led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to "rescue" Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria in the southern Sudan. King Leopold II demanded that Stanley take the longer route, via the Congo River, hoping to acquire more territory and perhaps even Equatoria. After immense hardships and great loss of life, Stanley met Emin in 1888, charted the Ruwenzori Range and Lake Edward, and emerged from the interior with Emin and his surviving followers at the end of 1889. Stanley then travelled to Cairo, where he spent two months writing his famous account of the expedition, before finally returning to London in April 1890.
